RUSSIAN PASSION | March 18 – Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia Rome
For its musicians, forming a string sextet means approaching a repertoire consisting almost entirely of masterpieces. Composed exclusively of musicians from Orchestra di Santa Cecilia, Sestetto Stradivari has earned a prominent position on the international landscape. On the heels of last season’s success with the performance of Brahms’s string sextets, today they are returning to Sinopoli Hall to perform two more masterworks, this time from the Russian repertoire. Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence, the composer’s homage to Italy and to one of its loveliest cities, where he frequently sojourned to escape the rigours of the Russian winter, is actually a composition permeated with the happiness of melodic invention typical of its author. Less known but no less interesting is Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sextet, which stands out for its energy, freshness, and brilliant colouring, supported as always by the artist’s masterful composing.
